Welcome to 2017! I’m taking a new approach this year, starting off with a series on all things Physician Burnout. I’ll start off with a weekly update on Sundays explaining each of the six drivers of physician burnout in successive posts. Midweek I will share vignettes about health care organizations are reducing the risk of physician burnout. These come straight from our book. These organizations are using approaches that anyone can follow. Some are easier to implement than others, but all are effective.
The Six Drivers of Physician Burnout
You may be wondering what those six drivers are, so I’ll give you a sneak preview now:
- Work Overload – made worse for physicians due to workplace chaos and time pressure
- Lack of Control – a direct challenge to physicians’ strongly held value of autonomy
- Inadequate Reward – physicians make decent money, but are losing nonmonetary rewards like prestige, autonomy, and joy in patient care
- Breakdown of Community – there’s less time for physicians to connect with each other, or with their support staff, and even their families
- Absence of Fairness – many physicians feel diminishing trust and respect from leadership
- Mismatch of Values – increasingly leaders focus on quality care while reducing resources to protect financial performance, frustrating physicians in the process
