You're a CEO or an aspiring CEO.

How CEOs Build Trust

What is one of the most important factors for YOUR success? It's not discussed often, and until recently was simply assumed by many - the trust that people inside, and outside, your organization have in you.

In my last post, I discussed the importance of trust and how CEOs can identify the level of trust that their people have in them.

Now, let's discuss how you go about building trust. Here are key actions to take:

  • Develop your statement about leadership trust and why it is important to you.

  • Communicate this widely to everyone in your organization, using multiple modalities -- newsletter/email, in-person presentations/town halls, broadcast text messages, and social media posts - to ensure you reach everyone in your organization.

  • Go on a listening campaign, meeting with as many people as possible individually or in small groups, sharing your thoughts on trust, and asking their advice on how to engage their colleagues.

  • Take notes on what they say, commit to at least one personal change, and let people know about the change and the results.

  • Most importantly, honor your commitments, or explain the challenges that keep you from doing so.

As you build trust with your direct reports, you can then mentor them in doing the same with their direct reports. Encourage them to seek your guidance on how to do this most effectively.

As trust grows, your team can make decisions more quickly and adapt to challenges more quickly, enabling you to outpace your competition.

In the next post, we'll talk about how trust changes team dynamics and how you can capitalize on that.
